Shadow Ops Fortress Frontier Myke Cole Books

I loved the first book, but thought it had a few bits that could be better. This one is a definite improvement - Cole's storytelling and pacing are fantastic. I tore through this in two days - can't wait until the next one!

Shadow Ops Fortress Frontier Myke Cole Books Reviews

Completely action packed. Don’t expect much of a chance to put this one down, you’ll have to force yourself as I did. Fantastic world building. So refreshing to read something that integrates a mature modern military story with the wonder of urban fantasy. Definitely recommend the first as well as this, the second, in the series.
I've read a lot of trilogies and series...es, and it's a general rule that the second book is, at least in my haughty opinion, the least engaging of the series, no matter the length. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is my least favorite of the series. I'm not a fan of The Two Towers. Etc. Etc.

I freaking LOVED this book. Cole set the bar for himself pretty high with Control Point. He exceeded it with Fortress Frontier. My jaw dropped at least three times reading this, usually followed by some exclamation of surprise, giddiness, bouncing like a little schoolgirl, and general glee. There were some great surprises here, and it's more than worth the read.
Book two in a trilogy is often the weak link, but I found Fortress Frontier to be better than Control Point. I really liked Col. Alan Bookbinder and his story and character evolution. And even though it's a fairly obvious bridge novel, it adds plenty to the overall plot and the world building. Very happy with this one. If the author, Myke Cole, nails the landing in Breach Zone, I may have to go directly into his prequel Reawakening trilogy. Well, as soon as the third one is released.
The character and plot arcs helped to keep things a bit more engaging, but at times it was still a slog. The frequent multi-paragraphing monologues, rather than breaking it up some, were very frustrating to read. And this is not the author’s fault, but the copyeditor failed on several occasions, throwing me out of the story. The final act was thrilling, at least.
After I had a love/hate relationship with the main character from the first book, you start off by being introduced to a new character. It's a similar situation, with his gaining a magical power, but the way he deals with it is a nice contrast to how Britton handled his awakening. For a while it parallels what happened in the first book, but from a different perspective. Where this book blew me away was when it picks up and deals with the aftermath of Control Point. Myke Cole does a fantastic job of pointing out the cracks in the system, while giving us characters who present different insights into a very complex and rich world. The military lingo gives it a very real feel, and took some getting used too, but a glossary of the terms helps ease you into all the ACRONYMS.
Myke Cole--Yay. Yay, Yay, Yay!!!!

You took what started out as a fantastic idea with a somewhat frustrating main character and turned the second installment of the series into a fracking fantastic novel that could easily stand on its own.

I love Alan Bookbinder. What a relatable main character. I found myself getting into the story much more when told from his point of view. I was rooting for him to succeed from nearly the very first page.

And the reintroduction of Harlequin--excellent. I'm on that guy's side as well.

The action in this book was so well-written, I felt like I was watching a movie. I was literally on the edge of the couch, glued to my nose. I'm going to need glasses after this.

I was a big fan of the growth of the plot towards larger political questions. The society you've created is not totally unlike what I believe the world, and in particular the United States, would be like with the introduction of sorcery. But I do believe that there would be people fighting for the civil rights of sorcerers much like the civil rights movements in the past. I can't wait to see how it's resolved.
When I read the first book of this series, I really enjoyed it, but hated the end. Still, I liked it enough to continue the series, and I am very glad that I did. Fortress Frontier has all of the greatness from the first book, without the frustrating characters and story lines. The biggest reason for this (other than the evolution of the author) is that most of the book has a new main viewpoint character. Oscar Britton still makes a few appearances (near the beginning he was still very annoying as he was begging for comfort from his companions even though they were still sickened by what he'd done), but for the most part his role is small and mostly enjoyable. The new main character, the appropriately named Alan Bookbinder, is a Colonel that is only a paper pusher, never having seen any sort of battlefield. At the start of the book, he feels a vast rushing power that feels like it's drowning him. Unlike Britton in the previous book, he immediately turned himself in. Consequentially, he's sent over to the forward operating base in the other world as one of the main officers. Chronologically, this is before the end of the first book. Things go very bad soon after that, and with the portal to Earth shut down, their base is stranded in hostile territory without any back-up, resupply, or escape. Bookbinder then sets off with a group of soldiers and a Naga prince to try to find help from the Indian base in the alien world. I really enjoyed his character, especially with how he grows as a person and leader throughout the book as he faces multiple challenges. It's also great that his adventure gives the reader more of a look at the world and all of the crazy things that inhabit it. His special power, which allows him to leech off of other's powers, and even deposit that magical energy into an item also has a lot of potential, and created a lot of cool little moments during the adventure. I won't spoil anything about what happens in the book, but I will say that it has a much better ending that I really enjoyed, and made me want to jump right into the third book. I'd highly recommend this book and series.
