This book was recommended to me while I was on a recent holiday in Croatia. I was interested to read about personal experiences of the war between Serbia and Bosnia as had met people who lived on the border between Serbia and Croatia and were seriously affected. In fact, while travelling from Zagreb to Split by car, I saw graveyards and evidence of bullet holes in homes and other buildings in the villages I passed through. This book is a moving account of the experiences of a large family who lived in Sarajevo and how each member was affected by the conflict. This true story is the experience of the war of two sisters; one who went to Zagreb in Croatia and the other who remained in Sarajevo. It is recommended to all who would like to know how ordinary familes suffered and survived a terrible war.Tags : Goodbye Sarajevo [Atka Reid, Hana Schofield] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Goodbye Sarajevo Atka Reid Hana Schofield 9781408814567 Books Reviews
A wonderfully honest and to the point account of what life really was like for these two girls who both had entirely different experiences during this tragic war, but they were linked by their strong family ties that never let them down, and infact helped with their resolve to be strong. As luck would have it th entire family was able to escape and begin a new life in New Zealand. I am
Icky enough to know Atca and it is with admiration I write this review. A well written account which helped me understand the war which was taking place while we over here in newZealand were just going on with our normal quiet lives. It is a wake up call for us all.
Written in a refreshingly simple style which held the readers attention by the switch of writer throughout the narrative. Thus rendering a different perspective on the circumstances that befell the people in Sarajevo. The book provided good clear insight into a complex situation.
This book was a well-written account of the horrors of war and living as a refugee. The narrative is engaging and the people that are written about are multifaceted. Humanity in the midst of tragedy comes to life right before your eyes.
I really enjoyed this book. Brings home what the people in Sarajevo went through, while the rest of the world went about its daily business. Told in a very factual, down to earth way, the terrible reality of not being able to eat for two days, watching your two year old brothers get thin and malnourished, and burning your jeans to keep warm in winter.
Everyone should read, especially those in politics, whose decisions often can make other people suffer!
What a wonderful account of this terrible war -a must-read. I have been to Sarajevo recently and the spirit of the people is truly remarkable.
Easy reading book that helps to understand what happened in the Balkans after the breakup of Yugoslavia. The first person accounts gave an excellent description of how the Seige of Sarajevo affected the population. And to think that this family was one of the lucky ones to get out.....
Cried several times throughout this book. A very emotional depiction of what people when through during the Yugoslav war. This book makes me feel grateful for being raised in America and thankful to my parents for doing everything in their power to bring us here during the war.
